Guests:  Esther Corrales introduced her Daughter who is visiting to celebrate Esther's birthday today.
Announcements by Pres. Charlotte:
  • Food Fight was won by the Sojourners with the two groups raising $6518($4018 for GV Community Food Bank and $2500 for the Sahuarita Food Bank. Thank you to everyone who supported this project.
  • The Four Way Test speech contest will take place on April 17 and Emma Vaterlaus, our Interact representative,will give her speech to us at next week's meeting.
  • The Valle Verde Club Foundation introduced a new program for memorial donations to the foundation. Memorial cards are available to make donations.
  • Tickets for the Tucson Casa Adobes Rotary 8th Grade Honor Roll and Scholarship Raffle are available for $20 and $5 will be given to our club for each ticket sold. Lots of great prizes.
Dist. 5500 Announcements
  • Register now for the District 5500 conference to be held on June 4-5.
  • Oro Valley Satellite club - Woman in Rotary is collecting toiletry items by April 24.
  • Peacebuilder Clubs Saturday, April 24 will have a clean up project at Camp Lawton on Mount Lemmon. Contact Joe Daniszewski by texting 520-245-4350.
  • Tucson Rotary Club to celebrate their 100th Anniversary is challenging Dist clubs to walk 100mi. Let Charlotte know if you want to join other walkers in our club and keep track of your walking distance covered by the end of May. This is for outside walks and not just to the kitchen from your recliner. T Shirts available for $12 with our club paying $6 dollars and walkers pay $6.
Presentations: Mark Horton and JP gave Paul Harris awards to Charlotte Gates - Paul Harris +3, Craig Altschul, Paul Harris +4, Paul Barker, Paul Harris +7 and Rick Buckman, Paul Harris and Paul Harris +1.
Phil Silvers presented a Rotary Womens shirt from Uganda Rotary club to Ed and Marlene Farver for their financial support for medical supplies to the Rotary Family Health Days in Uganda every year since 2013. The total donation with matching grants is over $20,000.
 
Speakers: Amber Mathewson, Library Executive Director and Brian Edney and Karen Williams, Pima County Library Foundation.
Amber gave us an overview of the Pima County Library System. Pima County has 27 libraries with a 47 million dollar budget funded by Pima County secondary property tax. The county library system has over 500 employees with a budget of 18 million dollars and each library costs about one million dollars to run each facility. They also have a Bookmobile and Book bikes.
Library Card holders have increased to over 390,000.
Funding help is also received from the Friends of Library, grants and other funding sources.
Pre Covid the library provided programs including Public Health Nurses that come to the
libraries to do Blood Pressure checks and Health Education, After school snacks, Ideas space program,Youth Media Centers and GED and job help programs. Also, they have Out of School learning, Career Online High School for over 22yr olds to get their high school diploma, Homework help,and Seed Library.
Electronic resources were used extensively during covid while libraries were closed during this last year. Refer to librarypima.gov for information about all the programs offered.
During the last year, Sahuarita Library has been completed along with the new Wanda
Gibson-Edmond Gordon Library. Several libraries have been remodeled. The Libraries are now fine free. University of Arizona has expanded their Library Programs.
 
Brian Edney, Pima County Library Foundation, stated that the Foundation provides funds that support library programs such as: Ready Start and Career Online and recently the Outdoor Performance space at Sahuarita Library. The space at Sahuarita Library will be finished in July, 2021and will be great for music and reading presentations. The foundation still needs about $24,000 to complete the $75,000 cost for the project. 
 
Next week:  In Their Own Voice,  National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Southern Arizona, Judi Maikoff Coordinator.  Members of NAMI share their personal experiences with mental illness.
