Club Notes December 17, 2020
The first ever ZOOM holiday celebration took place with 33 Rotarians participating.  Everyone was dressed for the party in their finest holiday sweaters and hats.  (My sentimental favorite was Jim Rusk as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  The nose was priceless.)
The Invocation was provided by Michele Lewis.  The poem “When Giving Is All  We Have”  celebrated  volunteerism.   Alberto Rios, the inaugural state poet laureate of Arizona, is the author of the poem.  He is quoted as saying “we give for so many reasons and are bettered by it.”
  • Resident Charlotte reminded everyone there is still an opportunity to ring the bell for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive.  Contact Esther Corrales to sign up.
  • The annual shopping spree “Dress for Success” occurred on December 10.  Four club members joined together to shop for 11 children from Sopori School.  It wasn’t the same without the smiling and excited faces of the children as they picked out their gifts of clothing and shoes.
  • Jim Rusk reported on Jazz in the Desert Reimagined.  Donations continue to be received bringing total donations to approximately $19,000 and expenses totaling $1200.
  • At 10:00a.m. on Saturday December 19, the Interactors along with Bill Grantham will complete Christmas cards with personal messages included.  Cards will then be brought to La Posada for distribution to residents.
  • On January 23, District 5500 will sponsor the Virtual Rotary Leadership Institute for leadership training of Rotarians.   If you are interested in participating, you will be reimbursed for your enrollment fee of $20.  Charlotte encouraged participation especially for new members, presidents-elect and those interested in assuming a leadership role.
  • The Tucson Sunrise Rotary Club on-line fundraiser has been extended one more week.   Go to their website to learn more about bidding on items in the auction.
  • The Tubac Rotary Club is hosting their 17th annual five club golf tournament on January 1 at the Tubac Golf Resort.  A lot of food and fun is promised.  Proceeds from the event will help local charities.
  • Old Pueblo Rotary Club is hosting virtual bingo.  Go to their website to learn further details.
  • President Charlotte concluded her remarks by thanking everyone for working together on so many projects this year.  Despite the pandemic, members of our club accomplished many goals.
Party time began with the ugly sweater contest.  Oh, what a sight we were with hats, bells, tinsel, snowmen, cows, Santa Claus, and Key West beads.  Three judges declared the winners:  first prize of a $50 Amazon gift card went to Ron Darrah, second prize of a $30 Amazon gift card went to Sue Horton and third prize to Michele Lewis, a $20 Amazon gift card.
Then the music began.  A tune meant to distract (and distract it did) played throughout the game of “Name that Christmas Carol.”  Verses from fifty Christmas carols appeared on screen and the winner had to identify the song.  Roxana Rico was the winner of a $10 Amazon gift card by naming 22 songs.
A surprise visit from Santa Claus concluded the holiday fun.  He did not bring a bag of coal, for which we were all very grateful.  Just allowed us to express our wishes for Christmas.
Special thanks to Mary Fisher the emcee of the contests and Charlotte Gates who was the impetus to all of the fun.
By all accounts the holiday celebration on-line at 7:00 a.m. with no food or beverages was a success.  All it took were people that cherished and respected one another.  And a joie de vivre!
Many blessings are prayed for you and those dearest to you.  Happy New Year.
Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 7,  2021 via Zoom and will feature the Greater Green Valley Foundation.
