MEETING NOTES May 13, 2021
Mark Horton’s invocation asked for guidance, strength, blessing on our speaker, peace in the Middle East, and our continued efforts of Rotary service to the world.
  • President Charlotte and Sojurner Mo Raso presented Penny Pestle from Sahuarita Food Bank a check for  $2,515.  She encouraged us to come by the construction site of the new Food Bank building which have space for family and workforce development programs.
  • Sojourner, Maureen Raso, will be returning to New Jersey next week and received a parting gift from Charlotte for all her volunteer activities.
  • John Knutson’s birthday is May 19 and Happy Birthday was sung to honor him.
  • June 3, 2021 is the date Valle Verde meetings return to the United Methodist Church.  Masks, social distancing will be required.  Hold harmless agreements were distributed to be returned to Sue Horton prior to our club’s return to indoor meetings in June.
  • Charlotte thanked Tom Cook for arranging for our club to meet in person in the Ramada.
  • Valle Verde Rotary has a new logo which will be displayed on the new work tee shirts.
  • Fisher House supplies are still needed and may be dropped off in the blue bucket at each meeting.  Refer to Charlotte’s email listing items to donate.
  • Prior to our meeting our club has logged 739 walking miles.  When we reach 1,000 miles, we will have earned a donation to Polio Plus for the club.
  • So far 26 members plus spouses have signed up for the May 27 dinner honoring outgoing President Charlotte.  Food and drink will be catered by El Rodeo and music provided by Jerry Leggett.  The cost of the event is $15 per person.
  • Gary was sending in the work tee shirt order May 13.  Anyone wishing to get a tee shirt needed to notify Gary before leaving the meeting if they had not already done so.
  • Charlotte reminded that EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) is an important club goal.  If every member donates at least $100 our club will continue to be a Sustaining Club.  Rotary Direct is an easy way to make automatic donations through My Rotary.
  • Every member should register on My Rotary.  Future communications will come via My Rotary so it is important to be registered.
  • Tubac Rotary is selling 500 coupon books for $60 each.
  • Charlotte encouraged registering for the District Conference and the Freaky Friday drawings.
  • Rotary International Virtual Conference registration is also open with a $60 registration fee.
  • Roxana Rico brought gifts for all Rotary members who participated in any of the Continental School projects during the year.
  • Chuck opened with news of four high school students being awarded scholarships of $2,000 each.
  • Chuck took us through the past fifteen months from the early news of needing to prepare for a virus pandemic to the present time where many Green Valley residents are fully vaccinated and we are beginning to see things gradually return to pre-Covid times.
  • The first known Covid case was learned about in the fire department in February, but not to be shared with the public.  There was daily communication with Pima County officials and daily ordering of PPE from different sources with strategic stockpiles being used up quickly.
  • The work for the firemen was stressful, and they needed to work through a new response model which was difficult for them.  It was also stressful on their families.  Fortunately there were no positive tests for firemen until October, and the firemen bonded together working every shift without a single sick day.
  • Each day there were new challenges to deal with, but the politicizing of the virus was the most difficult.
  • In January, the crews began getting vaccinated and the Green Valley firemen were one of two fire stations to become vaccination qualified.
  • One of the adverse effects of the year may be difficulty in recruiting new fire fighters.
  • The Fire Corps is returning in good numbers and by July will be back to providing service.
  • Lock boxes are available for a $50 fee which allow fire fighters to enter a home in a medical emergency where the resident is unable to come to the door.
