Kathy Prather is the Superintendent and CEO of the Pima Joint Technical Education District and Josh Fields is Director of Career and Technical Education at Sahuarita and Walden Grove High Schools.
The technical education programs are designed to prepare students to enter the workplace with employable skills or to prepare them to continue their education beyond high school.
In 2006, Proposition 400 was passed in Arizona which provides state tax dollars for enhanced opportunities for youth.   These dollars support three campuses of the Pima Joint Technical Education District in Tucson.  JTED in turn provides funds to high schools to support their programs.
Students in this program earn $34 million dollars per class after entering the workplace.  98% of students graduate from high school.  82% are placed in college, career, or the military upon graduation.  80% of Sahuarita and Walden Grove students participate in some CTE classes.
There are a large number of career training opportunities at each high school, and students may attend a CTE class at one school and take their remaining course work at the other school.  Walden Grove has a heavy equipment operator program which has led to excellent career opportunities for its graduates enabling them to enter a good paying career and advance through college and beyond in leadership positions.  A new health care program will start next year providing employable workers in our area hospitals.
