Meeting Notes May 6, 2021
The Invocation was presented by President Charlotte Gates.
“As we gather here today as members of Rotary, we pray that we are ever mindful of opportunities to render our service to fellow citizens and to our community.  Keeping in mind always the enduring values of life, exerting our efforts in those areas and on those things upon which future generations can build with confidence.  Let us continue to strive to make a better world.  Amen.”
  • President Charlotte began the meeting with the following reminders:
  • On May 27 at 5:00p.m. the first Thirsty Thursday since March 2020 will be held.    But this Thirsty Thursday will be like no other as we bid “Adios Senora Presidenta” to Charlotte.  The festivities with live music will be held in the Ramada where we meet regularly.  A buffet dinner catered by El Rodeo will be served along with Mexican beer, wine, and iced tea.  A special program is planned with our very own Ron Darrah as the MC.  The cost is $15 per person.  Please bring your spouse.  Remember - there is no morning meeting that day.
  • Charlotte announced that the Paul Harris winner is Judith Noyes.
  • Kathleen Silvers made a “save the date” announcement for Monday, May 17 from 6:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. with a Zoom live streaming presentation by Jerry Leggett of the Tubac Club.  The topic is peace, peace building and peace clubs.  If you are interested, please let Kathleen know so that the Zoom invitation can be sent to you.
  • Immediately following the club meeting today, interested club members will be going to Fisher House with Jim Rusk.
  • This week Charlotte and Judy Lindsey met with Valley Assistance Services to present an approved grant request check for $500.
  • The Rotary One Hundred Mile Challenge Walk has generated 555.4 miles to date.  The challenge began April 1 and will continue through May.  Don’t forget to record your miles walked in the club log book.
  • Rotarians At Work club t-shirts are available to order.  Let Gary Friedman know if you want to purchase a t-shirt.
  • District 5500 is hosting a virtual conference on June 4 and June 5.   The cost for registration is $10.
Charlene Westgate, owner of Westgate Garden Design and member of the Green Valley Rotary Club, presented the topic on the use of rainwater harvesting in our own gardens.  Using nature as an ally to gardeners to create low maintenance lush gardens is Charlene’s expertise.
We learned today:
  • Simple steps we can take in our own backyards to capture rainwater.
  • Why landscaping matters to our community with less use of concrete and pavers.
  • Natural ground cover permits about 50% of rainwater to soak into the earth.
  • Sixty-five percent of our water use goes to outdoor use, landscaping and pools.
  • Contrary to most understanding, more rain falls in a year in Tucson than is consumed in an entire year of municipal water.  On average in a year more than 26,000 gallons of water fall, with 12 inches of water per acre.
  • Landscape planning is crucial to capturing rainwater in the ground rather than running-off the surface.
  • Our soil is the most effective and least expensive tank in which to collect rain.
  • Select plants native to the Sonoran desert.
  • Use mulch around your plants.
  • Cover your pool.
  • Use a water tank to collect rainwater.
  • Create basins in your landscape design to collect rainwater.
Future program speaker for May 13 is Chuck Wunder, who will give a year-end review of the Green Valley Fire Department.  On May 20, the program speaker will be David Simmer to talk about water poverty on the Navajo Nation.
