Guest Speaker, Judi Maikofe, Coordinator of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Southern Az. She spoke about the Alliance Program “In Their Own Voice” by presenting her life's journey with Bi-Polar disorder to help us understand mental illness.  She is an RN and at 25 years old she had a break from reality that greatly impacted her daily life. She said she had difficulty doing her job, home activities and taking care of her family. During one of her episodes she called for an ambulance to help her husband who she thought was having a heart attack. The paramedics noticed she was confused and she was taken to a hospital. She was immediately diagnosed as Bi-Polar 1 and received treatment and medication. In Mental Health, immediate help and diagnosis is unusual. With this help she stated she was able to return to work, raise her son and live through it. She has been working for Nami for 13 years. She is able to get good rest and has learned a healthy diet with less carbs. Processed food and sugar. She also increased her daily activities. She said that having strong family support, a home and faith to give blessings for what she has along with being able to tell her story.  Having Mental Illness is not the end of life.
